The Big Hole River is one of Montana's finest attractions, with diversity that's hard to match. The Big Hole is home to Rainbow, Brown, Brook Trout, and Cutthroat fish. Rocky Mountain Whitefish are also present, as well as the last fluvial (river-dwelling) population of grayling in the continental United States. The Big Hole is fishable all the way from the source down to the convergence with the Beaverhead.

During a normal year, with average runoff from the snow packed mountains, the salmon fly hatch will begin early to mid-June. Anglers and Outfitters descend upon the Big Hole to take part in the frenzy. This may be the busiest time of year on the Big Hole River. The river can become a little crowded with boats as well as bank anglers but there is no place to fish like the 'Big Hole' during the salmon hatch.  After the salmon fly hatch, fishing pressure on the 'Big Hole' is relieved. Angling is still excellent. . . as the caddis and mayfly hatches are very abundant. Fishing the in Fall may be the best time to relax and spend a quiet afternoon fishing on the river. The weather is perfect and the water levels are stable. There are very few anglers and the browns are aggressive.
